We started to encounter snow about 2/3 of the drive up Seymour, and the road was not well plowed. The snow covered parking lot was largely unplowed. With about 6 inches of snow at the trailhead, the group of six hiked up the ski run. The only other group was the VOC, plus a few individual hikers. We decided it was safe enough to go up the shortcut to First Pump, via the old main trail passing through a gully. We were the first group up First Pump, followed by the VOC, and the first, and possibly the only group to Second Pump that day. Light wind, fresh snow. If the weather continues like this we may be snowshoeing by next weekend, all before Halloween.
After two weeks recently of walking and hiking in the desert, I was not keen to hike in rain or snow. Fortunately, I had some most amicable people join the hike, including some veterans of the club. Thanks to all the guys who broke trail, especially Steve. Special mention of newbie member Majid, his first hike on Seymour, who broke trail in the most vertical parts of the ascent to Second Pump.
