InactiveAttracted to a new bike route (starting from 22nd Street skytrain station) and a new destination (Crescent Beach) I told Dennis I would be going on this new ride.
It is often said that North Shore Hikers don’t meet at the appointed time, they leave at the appointed time. So it was here when I missed the mark by 15 minutes and he left without me. I decided to give chase to try to meet the group at Krispy Kreme donuts in Delta, but Alex Fraser Bridge was in the way. I had never been across that bridge on a bike and didn’t know the way. First crossing Queensborough Bridge, then going along Boyd Street, always keeping the AF bridge in sight, I went along. I noticed a young man on a very nice hybrid bike pulling a trailer. Turns out he was also looking for the AF bridge, and while he had a map, I was guessing my way there.
Following some signage, we found our way across, and on the other side I asked this young man where he was going. He said Quebec City, and it was his first day of riding that day. Having a slightly better idea than he did of where we were, I led the way. Turns out we were riding along Burns Bog/Delta Nature Reserve (my first time), which was just beautiful, for a few kilometres, but with not many turnoffs. We got to 64th Avenue which was where he wanted to be, but I had overshot my destination. There we parted ways, he to Quebec City, and me to Krispy Kreme Donuts on Scott Road. Cycling back along some very attractive residential streets along Burns Bog, I was relieved and happy to find Dennis’ folding bike parked outside the appointed place, and Janice and he inside.
After coffee, it was a very pleasant ride down through Delta to South Surrey, through residential areas and parks along the power line, stopping at Serpentine Fen. On to Mud Bay and lunch at Crescent Beach with views of Boundary Bay. Sunny and windy through the day especially in South Surrey. A total of 66 km, approximately.
Thank you to Dennis for leading this ride, and to Janice for her amicable company.
