I had originally wanted to approach Tunnel Bluffs from the Sea to Sky highway, and the lay-by (rest area) Tunnel Point. But I discovered during a recce in December that the parking there is now limited to 30 minutes. This was presumably done to prevent hikers running across the highway.

In any case 5 of us (Heather, Ghislaine, Tracy, Cristina) car-pooled and set off from my house in Dundarave, West Vancouver at 9.30. We met Michelle at the Sunset trailhead parking lot in Lions Bay and set off at about 10am.

After a relatively steep ascent the trail levels off and delves through tree-tunnnels, over creeks and across the occasional tree trunk bridge. On the way up we bumped into a fellow group of hikers – the West Vancouver Seniors Centre’s Thursday club – who occasionally do the same hike, at the same time (coincidence, or conspiracy?!)

Although we had seen breaks in the fog enveloping Vancouver on the drive up to Lions Bay, the panorama from Tunnel Bluffs was a dense, milky whiteness. After lunch we headed back to the trailhead amidst energetic chatter and creaking knees.

    Total time: 3hrs 30 mins, distance 11km.
