On Feb. 1st, five of us had a look at the TransMountain site along the slopes of Burnaby Mountain, and watched the tiny bulldozers in the distance working away at tripling the capacity of the oil storage site there. Sound barriers as high as 10 thick mattresses are stacked up to protect the surrounding neighbourhoods from construction noise, and the injunction area at the entrance is still enforced. We followed the clearings along the multiple oil and electricity routes on the mountain, ending up high along the fence of the Suncor Energy plant on the northeast side of it. Slowly but steadily, I’ve been trying to introduce some of my ‘theme walks’ in the urban areas, stringing the available greenspace together into interesting, varied, long-distance walks. Good for snow-free outings in winter, and good for training up some of our new members for our more elevated summer hikes at the B level. It looks like there’s an enthusiastic fan base for this concept developing among our membership now!
