I put a very last-minute posting on the Forum, ‘hike updates’ and wasn’t optimistic of a response. Luckily J. Cowan contacted me in the evening on another matter but was game for an outing. We decided to do a little trail improvement, therefore carried markers, hammer, nails, a clipper and a saw. We carved out a couple of detours around fallen tree debris on our way down.
If you’re looking for solitude, shade, close-to-Vancouver and good cardio exertion, this trail is excellent. With the recent rain, the moss at the lower slopes was a perky emerald.
The public parking area above Sunset Marina was jam-packed so we drove back a short distance to an exit/overpass and parked in a residential area ocean side. You can hike back to the trailhead single file along 99 leaving the bike lane safe & clear.
Exiting the trail at the top, you pop out onto a wide gravel path built since the Olympics – a short distance to the left is Bowen Lookout or going right an easy circuit around Yew Lake. There were lots of Sunday trippers enjoying the park. Round trip 9.5 km, elev. gain – 975 m, average grade 20.5%, description in “103 Hikes” Mary Tainsh
