ParticipantThe free-standing mountain in the midst of the Fraser Valley with the steep cliffs that we hardly give any thought to and just speed right by on the freeway on our way to points further east is called Sumas Mountain. But it’s well worth considering for a lovely day hike because the views never disappoint: the centre back part of the mountain contains jungle-like lush forest with several creeks to cross, and once you go up higher, it offers wide views North, to the Fraser River and the agricultural fields between Mission and Harrison with the snow-topped mountains in back. Walk around pretty Chadsey Lake for the final ascent to the ‘rock,’ the eastern-most viewpoint where the mountain’s cliff makes an abrupt plunge straight into the Fraser Valley. Here, you look across to Chilliwack and the Sumas Prairie, now recognized since last year’s disastrous flooding for what used to be Sumas Lake or ‘Lost Lake,’ a favorite fishing spot of First Nations people before the area was drained to be turned into fertile agricultural lands. Our group of seven upbeat, smart and adventurous women, some of whom were not familiar with this hike, had a good time in ideal weather for this close-to seven hour workout. Thank you for your very good company, all of you!
