I’m guilty of not paying too much attention, or maybe the mention of practising on steep slopes in the trip description caught my particular attention, but I did not think Snowshoe 101 meant it would be a beginner trip as it actually was ( I am not a beginner). But I have no regrets about going. I got to retrieve my snowshoes out of storage, and use them. The weather was glorious, sunny and not particularly cold. The sky an intense blue, no wind, and the trees were spectacularly dressed in blazing white with snow. There were 5 of us in total. Ye, our snowshoe leader and teacher, paced the trip well with tips and instructions at various stops. I even learned few tricks such as glissading steep slopes with snowshoes, propelled by one’s thigh muscles. We had lunch within sight of Dam Mountain, where we had opportunities to take in the views, converse, and take photos. The snow which started out crunchy underfoot, changed to nice and soft upon reaching the alpine around Dam Mountain. The return trip was by a different route that was less steep, perfect for beginners. Ye led us all back to the Grouse Gondola as planned just in time for the 3 pm descent: A good end to a good trip.
