MemberThe day was glorious. You could see blue sky everywhere as if the heavens had opened up for us…I could even hear the angels singing my name, “ye, Ye, YE, YEEEEE” across the entire Seymour parking lot. Wait… am I hallucinating? Premature heatstroke? Sunstroke? What the heck? I turn around to face my angels…(or demons) and I saw, Tracy racing between the cars, yelling, “YEEEE!”
She said she knew it was me as I had on my red polkadot ski jacket. She asked if she could join our trip, as somehow her GPS bought her to us and not to the other A hike on lower Seymour. The only thing she asked was whether there was any exposure on the hike and of course, I said , “no”. Little did I know, my concept of exposure is just a little bit different then her concept of exposure.
We started on the Dog Mountains trail and true to its name we met many unleashed dogs, even thought it says on the signs “dogs must be leased, oops, Freudian slip, leashed. We met brothers Luke and Cory, Metro Vancouver employees, and they said they had just finished installing a new humongous sign on the gate saying “ALL DOGS MUST BE LEASHED.” They said it was because the lakes, ponds, creeks have fragile ecosystems and dogs in the water can destroy the system, (reptilian/amphibian I suspect).
The trail was icy and micro spikes were necessary. We saw many ill prepared people in runners slipping and sliding. We had lunch on sun drenched Dog mountain and could see all the way to Vancouver Island. Tracy had left her backpack open and an opportunistic Raven flew down and took her ziplock bag full of trail mix. So if you ever see a holey ziplock bag lying around on Dog mountain, it maybe Tracy’s.
After lunch, we walked up the steep trail to Suicide Bluff. There were two roped sections with little exposure. I could see you could not fall very far. Tracy on the other hand, mumbled, (correct me if I am wrong Tracy), “I am going to kill you Ye” or something similar to that sentiment.
We made it safely to Suicide Bluff and were greeted by another excited dog. After a short sunbath, we hiked in a rolling snowy landscape back to the main trail parallel to the ski hill.
We were back at the cars by 2:20 pm. Thanks to Heather, Greg and Tracey for partaking on my very last minute A hike.
