I lead a hike to the new Kees Claire Hut on Cowboy ridge in the Whistler area.  It opened two weeks ago and is already booked sold for March 2020. The paid custodian said he only works weekends and the hut is locked up on weekdays for now. He is looking for volunteers to get it open 24/7. It looks very luxurious as everything is brand new. There is a gas fireplace in the main hall and huge plastic bottles of drinking water. The three toilets are compost and of course there are no showers. The dormitories sleep 38 and you have to bring your own mat and sleeping bag unlike Switzerland. It costs $45 for non ACC members and $30 for members. They say the area is so windy that the roof only gets about 4 “ of snow max. as most of it gets blown off. They plan to build two more huts to complete the Spearhead traverse, the most popular alpine traverse in BC.

I have to say, it felt like a memorial site for the five dead people it is dedicated to…A strange and unfortunately benefit.

More info: whistler gondola is shut down and we had to take the blackcomb gondola and then the peak to peak gondola to start our hike. We started at 9:45 am from the village and we were back in the car by 7 pm. We did not require headlamps and it did not rain on us. We were lucky.

I wanted to share this story from my hike yesterday, albeit alarming: a park ranger said a family visiting Whistler last month bought bear spray for their hike and the father thought is was like mosquito spray. He asked his family to line up and he commence to spray them. Needless to say they had to call for help…

You cannot make this stuff up!
