InactiveA Labour Day bike trip, so you’d expect participants would want to be labouring hard. Not a bit of it. Only six made it to the scheduled start at the Planetarium, and took the first rest stop after only twenty minutes at the Jimmi Hendrix shrine. Five more people were eventually discovered slurping coffee and stuffing donuts at a coffee shop an hour and a quarter after the official start. Eventually the trip got going on what was supposed to have been the real workout, the stiff climb up from Dollarton to the Seymour Demo Forest; alas, most people saw this as an excuse to get off their bikes and WALK. CD was devastated. We recruited another lost soul at the start of the Bikeway, who had got there by harnessing external forces.
Worse was to follow. More dallying occured along the banks of the Seymour River and again at the Salmon Hatchery. Eventually we managed to struggle up, again on foot, to the reservoir gazebo to check out the scenery and do some more eating, slurping, and gossiping.
The CD realised that no efforts on his part could possibly light a fire under this group, so after taking a strategic but illegitimate short cut on the way back he sensibly delegated leadership to Wendy, much to the delight of all concerned. Inspired by the new command structure, the group whizzed down the Lillooet Road at triple speed.
But this new found energy fizzled going up steep 3rd Street, so we had yet another rest looking at the trail-side display on the new Spirit Trail which seems to be something to do with crows. Then we idled downhill and at Lonsdale Quay, totally depleted, we decided to disperse. Some even managed to cycle home, but the official party boarded the Sea Bus for more R&R.
I’m sorry to have to report that nobody wanted to go back to the official end-point of the trip, the Planetarium. A sad day for the world of cycling and Canadian sports in general.

InactiveDennis, Gillian drew my attention to this section of the website and I’m glad she did! What a good read. Thanks for writing the report and thanks for leading the ride.
