This was an absolutely beautiful scenic bike ride. We met at the historical Deas Island at 10 am (has three relocated/restored 1900’s Victorian buildings). From there we biked to Ladner’s historical village and saw one of the oldest clocks in the lower mainland. After some discussion, the group decided they wanted to do a detour to Westham Island and see the Reifel Bird Sanctuary (we could not get in as you need to reserve ahead for one of the daily 150 spots and today they were full). After that, we decided to do the Brunswick point add-on as it is a lovely dyke trail that dead ends into impassable railroad tracks. But I decided not to do a “there and back” and take a short cut through a ditch.

My youtube video https://youtu.be/b37a0CPzQgo shows a detour through the ditch . The ad-hoc bridge crossing was challenging. The slopes were muddy and slippery. The bridge was composed of slimy wet wood. Cristina made it across okay with only a little swearing. She had a 11 pound bike with no saddlebags. Katy and Louise both let their bikes slide down the slope otherwise they would have had a mud bath. As the last biker to cross, I took a cautious approach by going diagonally through the tall grass on the right and grabbing onto the grass to avoid sliding down into the creek. In my Nike leisure runners, I had no traction and literally had to skate down the slope and across the bridge. To get up the other muddy side was impossible without the help of Louise and Katy. They grabbed my handlebars and pulled me and my bike up the steep and muddy embankment.

Unfortunately, we discovered the Tsawwassen Band had barricaded the Blue Heron Boardwalk due to Covid, so we did another detour further south to by pass it all. We rode to Boundary Bay Dyke Trail and down 64 back to Deas Island by 3:15 pm. This 38 km trip turned out to be 60 km+ with all the add-ons/detours.

Thanks to all for a fun and exhilarating bike ride!
