Six of us hiked from “Barrett’s View” (the first lookout on Cypress Mountain Road) to Hollyburn Lodge. We took the trail that runs north in a generally straight line along the east side of Marr Creek. This trail is showing more signs of wear and tear from mountain bikers with every passing week. The erosion and damaged root systems were not visible today on account of the fresh layer of snow. We arrived at the lodge just as the 12:00 horn was sounding in the distance. It was nice eating lunch in a warm lodge instead of sitting in a snowbank. The route back down initially followed the trail that runs south along the west side of Marr Creek. However all the deep fluffy snow on the ground and on the trees had obliterated known landmarks and the exact location of a certain turnoff wasn’t obvious. We retraced our steps for a bit and got back into known territory. The rest of the way down to the cars followed the trail we had made on the way up. It felt like a pretty remote hike considering how close we were to all the action on Cypress Mountain.

Trip stats: 8.43 km; 551m ascent; total time 4:21.
