Six of us met at St David Church Parking before 7:30 am. We started snowshoeing around 9:15 am. We parked at Biathlon Range at Whistler Olympic Park (Callaghan Valley Road). The trail was quite busy with a few backcountry skiing groups. The weather was excellent. We arrived to Hanging Lake around 11:15 am. While snowshoeing towards Rainbow lake along the south side of Hanging lake, we were in the shadow of the mountains. You feel colder (the wind chill effect?). We were blazing our own trail between Hanging Lake and Rainbow Lake. I like wilderness snowshoeing (I think it is one of the possible ways of discovering winter landscape.) I also like the sound of snow crunching beneath your feet while snowshoeing. It is kind of calming. I might be carrying a recorder with me next time!
When we see Rainbow Lake, the sun was high enough. We decided to have a lunch stop with a view of Gin Peak. The sun was shining towards our faces. We did a little loop along the north side of Rainbow Lake after lunch and came back to the parking lot around 2:15 pm.
Thanks to Barry for organizing this wilderness snowshoeing.
