The day dawned overcast and foggy in Vancouver. Undeterred, seven optimistic hikers arrived at
Franklin and Kamloops. Later as we drove down the treed avenue of the
provincial park north of Maple Ridge the skies brightened. Once on the
trail, the clouds broke up, and sunrays penetrated the forest and the water of
Gold Creek. The light shimmered on the surface reflecting back a pale green
above a streambed of small stones. On the return we took the short
connecting trail which drops down to Lower Falls. We climbed past the fencing at the
first dramatic viewpoint of the creek where it cascades into a deep eroded pool. We
spent time sitting on the smooth rock listening to the rhythm of moving
water while our keen photographer tried to capture the scene. We walked a further 2.5 kilometers
downstream along a wide graveled track to the end of our hike. It was a
beautiful day to be out – before a poncho will become fashionable fall attire.
