All about the sunshine…mushrooms…Depencier peak, October 19, 2021

With the amalgamation of Lynne’s hike and Anne’s hike together to capture a rare, practically unheard-of sunny day in Vancouver, we propagated into a large group of 17 eager hikers, (two new members and one guest).

The one of things I love about NSH, is the “familial” relationships. Our hike today was like a jolly family reunion with long forgotten relatives. The head of our family today was our quick-witted leader, Anne. Other familial members, were our famous botanist Lesley, who pointed out the flora for us, like, the tiny Coral mushroom, which can be palatable or poisonous! We also had Lidia and Richard who love making their backpacks heavier and heavier as they are avid mushroom connoisseurs. Similarly, we had a new hiker, named Zoe who is also a mushroom aficionado. Of course, we had our typical “injuries or ailment” comparison discussions. Quite the verbal/visual competition to see whom is worse off these days.

Even with Paul as our sweeper/end person, we managed to temporarily lose a hiker in the middle of the pack. I suspect she was off searching for the elusive chanterelle mushrooms. LOL!

Depencier peak is not a popular hike, so we could sunbath and eat lunch in privacy. Below, we could see Depencier and Hastings lakes, as well as the famous peak, known by NSH, as John’s Nipple, (although it seems more rounded these days).

We also found a wood sign in many pieces, and when we reassemble it, we believe it said, “Do not go down any further if lost. Wait for rescue”.

A BIG thanks to Ness, Anne and others, who did trail maintenance last week on this trail.

A side note: Mount Seymour is becoming a dog park! Vastly out numbering the rabbits at Jericho beach. The trail to first peak is narrow with some dogs off leash. I spoke with a Park Ranger and she said it is mandatory all dogs are on-leash because a month ago, a dog ran into the bush and chased a Buck. The Buck in turn ran onto the trail and attacked a different dog. The Park Ranger said this is an experiment allowing leased dogs on the mountain. She recognized the trails are narrow in places. She encouraged us to give feedback to BC parks, before they finalize their dog policy. I would encourage everyone to write to this link https://bcparks.ca/info/feedback/

I will send some photos to Katy to post as I never seem to be able to post any.

    Cheers, Ye

    Great hikes and excellent leadership!!

Thanks Anne for offering to lead this off beaten path route to a spectacular view of  DePencier Lake.

It’s a delightful outing on a sunny and warm day… we had an extended and relaxing lunch break.

I know that I can’t miss this hike.. thank you Anne and everyone for the company.

p.s… Anne and Lynne… it’s a bright idea and decision to combine two midweek activities when we have only one sunny day… thank you both!!!

p.s.s. Here are the photos taken and sent by Ye.
