Four of us met at Starbucks at 9:45am, then rode the Grouse gondola up for our usual favourite snow hike. We all brought micro-spikes, and one of us also carried snowshoes.
There had been no new snow the previous 48 hours; 10cm in the past week. However, recent spells of warmer weather had softened the snow base.
Following the packed snow trail to the top of Dam Mountain, micro-spikes were enough. But the trail heading further to Thunderbird Ridge is less travelled, less packed down, and we had to take care not to stomp hard and post-hole down into the snow. So the smart one switched to snowshoes, although we other three got by on micro-spikes OK.
Weather was cloudy but dry and relatively warm. This forecast web page:
windy.com/49.386/-123.077?48.977,-123.077,8
had said mostly cloudy, which turned out more accurate than this one:
mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Grouse-Mountain/forecasts/1231
which even the night before was forecasting clear sunny skies.
We greeted two sleepy grizzlies (Grinder & Coola) who had just waked up from hibernation — photo attached. 🙂
