This was a short snowshoe from Grouse chalet to Dam Mountain and back. Snow came late to Grouse this winter, so it was our first snowshoe trip. We learned how conditions are changing, and tested our clothing and gear for the new season.
Although Grouse’s downhill ski slopes had only enough snow to open two lifts, around the corner at the slightly higher Dam Mountain, when I stepped off the trail (wearing microspikes), I post-holed into deep snow past my knees. Snowshoes are the better choice for ease of travel off the main tracks which can be indistinct and hard to follow.
Also it’s difficult to climb hills in the soft fresh snow, if you’re wearing the typical microspikes like Kahtoolas or most of the Hillsounds at hillsound.ca/collections/traction-devices — except for the Trail Crampon Pro that I was wearing — bigger spikes 🙂
