Dusty, dusty, dusty trails and no rain in sight! We had to hike 30 m apart to avoid being encased in a giant “Linus Van Pelt” dust ball from Helm creek campground up to Cinder Cone. Yes, it has been amazing weather for hikers, but not a great commentary for the future of our planet. I sent Lesley Bohm a photo of Helm Glacier and she sent me a painting she did in the 1990’s of the glacier and it has shrunk by more then 50%! Where there was only one lake a few years ago, we now saw five lakes following the baseline of Panorama ridge!
On a positive note, we had one B+ hiker participating in her first C hike and her jaw-dropped when she saw Black tusk for the first time. We also had a very energetic hiker who said he would run over to panorama summit (extra 8 km), and he beat us by 45 minutes at our rendezvous point.
Some of us felt this was a very tiring hike as we have been doing hard C 30 km hikes for four weekends in a row. The sun and heat is wearing us out believe it or not. Hopefully, it will rain soon as the world is feeling a bit upside down at the moment.
