Paton Lookout was named for James Alexander Paton (1884- 1946) who according to Wikipedia was newspaperman who also served in the city council for Vancouver –Point Grey. He owned the Point Grey Gazette, which later became the Vancouver Courier when we had newspapers. He was charged with involvement with the kidnapping of Wong Foon Sing, accused of having murdered Janet Smith, but Paton was acquitted. He supported the movement of Japanese-Canadians into the province’s interior, and opposed giving them the right to vote.
Paton has a lookout and creek named after him. So we three tried to take him on in honor of Mary Tainsh who used to lead this bike ‘n hike.
Ice on the rooftops
There was ice on the rooftops this morning and two of our prospective group cancelled worried that there would be black ice on the 18 km bike ride. There was no black ice.
However there was too much snow on a steep incline to get to the lookout and back safely, so we turned around hoping to return in the summer. It is definitely a challenge scrabbling up with ropes and there is no gondola done.
Thank you Katy Poon for leading us on this magical 6 hour bike and hike.
