ParticipantA nice new idea came up: ride your bike from wherever you live to the trailhead, located 6 km away on the bike path into the Seymour Demonstration Forest , lock your bikes in the bushes and start hiking, in this case accompanied by the Halpert family of Lidia, Richard and Sylvia, and Bengul. A hot day mainly spent in the deep forest with some truly spectacular giant trees of hemlock and cedar, a waterfall, and lots of climbing up, over and under fallen trees. The route is not for the timid: it’s insanely steep and gymnastic all the way up there, always presenting us with yet another mountain slope to climb before reaching the actual summit with our tongues on our knees: a serious mental and physical challenge over the course of six hours there and back, biking again to the starting point at the gazebo. The pay-off up top is divine with its views in four directions, the map of the Lower Mainland layed out below. Sometimes, on the descent of a long hike, I marvel at what we did. I felt like a million bucks afterward, tired but strong and healthy, grateful that my body could pull off this kind of an outing. And then, after all this I cheated: I walked my bike on the ascent going south on Second Narrows Bridge, rather than doing one more knee-knackering, long hillclimb on the way home. Not just any ordinary Monday! Thanks Lidia for the initiative!
