Trip report for this hike:

During a week of mostly rainy (in the city) and snowy (on the peaks) weather, we saw a window of forecast sunny opportunity coming and grabbed it! We were disappointed to see that the Snowshoe Grind (chalet to Dam Mtn) was closed; and the Grouse Grind closed the day before our hike. So we decided to go up BCMC trail to Grouse chalet.

Morning dawned with mostly blue skies, and 4 of us gathered at Grouse gondola base Starbucks around 9am. I had put sunscreen on my face and sun cap in my pack, anticipating basking in the rays when we exited the forest at the top. But clouds moved in as we hiked up. There were icy patches on the trail when we reached the snow, so we put on spikes. Snow started to sprinkle within minutes of our reaching the chalet. At least we hit the time window about right.

Inquiring at the Grouse office, we learned that the Snowshoe Grind closure was not for avalanche risk, but for lack of snow. Had we known that earlier, we might have hiked it with micro-spikes during some of that sunshine!

Anyway, it was nice to get out there and stretch our legs.  🙂
