Back Pack Trip to Petgill Lake and Goat Ridge….Aug 4-6/12 led by Mary Tainsh

The 4 of us, Mary, Anne, Ryszard and Beth started up Petgill Lake trail on a warm but overcast day. As we headed through the woods the sun began to stream through the trees as we started hiking through the granite rock formations that make the Petgill hike so famous. We arrived after an easy 3 hours with an elevation gain of 645m, set up camp in a secluded area near the lake. While Anne finished her novel (Harry Potter in Spanish) the rest of us hiked around the lake which led to the old trailhead of a hike to Shannon Falls which we found too overgrown to travel.

Arriving back at camp, it was time for a nice swim in the warm lake. We got to listen to the hysterical cries of many day-hikers as they plunged into the clear depths. Blooming lily pads surrounded the edge of the lake. We then had dinner provided by Mary of spaghetti and meat sauce…and shared an assortment of cocktails through the evening. One more dip into the lake before turning in ended a truly splendid day.

Up early the next day to avoid the heat, we headed up the steep, rough but well- marked trail and in 2 hours we reached Goat Ridge. At the top the ridge, we travelled up and down rocky ridges with tarns and clusters of subalpine trees nestled below. We had great views of the peaks of Sky Pilot, Mamquam and Garibaldi. A few ventured to the end of the ridge to see Sky Pilot in all its glory (see Anne’s photos on the Forum). The long, hot hike down to camp was rewarded by another glorious swim and over a relaxing dinner, we toasted our accomplishments! Elevation gain to Goat Ridge was 975m in about 7 hours.

Our hike back the following day to the car was uneventful. We savoured a backpacking trip that gave us many adventures in a serene setting that seemed far away from the busy world.

Many thanks go to Mary for her trail finding skills and ability to find the perfect campsite!
