New guidebook for families and young hikers coming May 17

Garibaldi Park trail needs your helping hands!

BC Parks and the Friends of Garibaldi Park Society are calling all trail elves to help with a project on the Rubble Creek trail.

The project will replace the kiosk at the Rubble Creek and Taylor Meadows trail junction, about 6.5 km from the parking lot.

Ten volunteers are needed for September 18 and 19. The work will be labour intensive but special skills aren’t needed.

Volunteers will help:

  • Dismantle the old kiosk;
  • Dig posts for the new kiosk;
  • Build the new kiosk.

While building supplies will be flown in, you will be carrying tools and equipment from the BC Parks toolshed at Taylor Meadows. You'll also help carry water from Barrier Lake for the kiosk's new concrete posts.

Free overnight camping will be provided at the Garibaldi Lake campsite for volunteers. (Volunteers must have and bring their own overnight gear and supplies.)

Whether you're experienced with trail work or not, this is a great opportunity to give back to the trails you love!

To volunteer or for more information, email Jay (FMCBC Trails Committee) or Jagwinder (Friends of Garibaldi Park).

Membership Dues

Our annual club memberships expire on November 30. New members that pay their membership after October 1 get a two-month bonus with their new membership, which is valid until November 30, the following year. Spread the word to your friends who like to hike but have not yet joined a hiking club. Our club dues are a bargain at $25/year!

Multiple days hiking trips in the fall

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we did not have our regular week-long summer camp in 2019 and 2020, although we had several multiple-day outings. The most recent one was the three-day extravaganza in Whistler. For this fall, we are planning at least two more multiple-day days hiking events: Golden Ears and Manning Parks are on our radar for October.

COVID-19 and Club activities

We kept our club’s activities up to date and aligned with the evolution of the pandemic and Provincial Health regulations.

  • Our COVID-19 safety plan is available from our homepage.
  • We strongly encourage all participants to club activities to be fully vaccinated.

Updates from October 6, 2021 executive committee meeting

- Have you been in contact with someone with cold, sore throat, fever, flu or COVID-19 symptoms in the last 14 days?
- Are you in contact with someone currently in quarantine?

[Deleted 2 questions about international travel.]

Leader's choice for stricter covid rules

Trip leaders may set covid rules consistent with or stricter than the current BC's Restart plan at www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/covid-19/info/restart, e.g. group size, vaccination, etc. Any rules specified by the leader should be included in trip postings (whether on the main schedule or the Trip Updates Forum).

Carpooling

Leaders want everyone to have a good and safe time on their trips. This said, arranging rides for everyone can be very complicated (especially during covid). It is the group, that has to work together to try to ensure that everyone gets a ride. No driver is obligated to take passengers - especially during covid. And it could happen that someone, doesn't get a ride.

NSH 2019 Summer camp starts in a few weeks

2019 Summer camp

From Saturday July 20 to Sunday July 28, a large group of North Shore hikers will be hiking in the beautiful Selkirk Mountains near Revelstoke and Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. This year’s summer camp will spend 4 days at each of the two hiking destinations.

Most of the participating hikers will be staying at the Canyon Hot Springs near Rogers Pass and the Castle Junction Hostel near Lake Louise.

If you happen to be in the area, you are welcome to join the group for a day hike. A complete hiking schedule can be found here.

Additional multi-day trips

This year we are also going hiking in Europe. A brave contingent of 16 NS hikers are hiking the Haute Route from Chamonix, France, to Zermatt, Switzerland. Stay tuned for some exciting slide show presentations later this year.

Please note that the club has not set yet a destination for the 2020 Summer camp so if you have any suggestions let your Executive know.
