A new guide book, "Destination Hikes" by Stephen Hui has recently been published and Greystone Books generously donated six copies to the club to be given to members. We are planning to have a draw and announce the winners here soon (Update May 28: Results are announced in the General Forum and winners are notified by email)

Irene Miller

Club news

In February, North Shore Hikers lost a longtime member, Irene Miller, after a short illness at the age of 88. Irene was best known as our A hike coordinator leading hikes until 3 years ago! She held this position for many years and seemed to have a knack of getting members to volunteer to lead hikes. Irene’s knowledge of the north shore mountains was exemplary. For many of us, it helped us understand the maze of trails in the region. Her good sense of direction made it look easy to return to the trail head without getting lost. As a member for over 30 years, she holds the record for leading the most hikes for the club.

She was a very private person. We never knew exactly how old she was even refusing to disclose it to the medics when she needed first aid having injured herself on a hike. Many of us also didn’t realize that she was well known in other outdoor clubs, volunteering on their executives as well!

Irene will be remembered for her dedication, reliability, and conscientiousness during the years she devoted to providing and organizing hikes.

Her husband predeceased her 3 years ago and she leaves behind a son and daughter. The NSH have lost a member who will be thought of with great fondness for years to come.

Join AJ Maheu, volunteer with the N. Shore Search and Rescue and Lisa Paulson, Visitor Safety Specialist with Banff, Yoho and Kootney National Parks speak about the rescues they perform each winter. They will share tips on what every backcountry recreationist should do for trip planning, as well as the gear and training necessary to safely access the backcountry. Learn from others so you do not become a rescue statistic.

How North Shore Hikers Began

Did you know that NSH is founded in 1958? Below is an excerpt from the club bulletin published on November 1961:

“The founding meeting, on November 28, 1958, was called by Mr. Harcourt Roy, at that time Executive Director of the Central Fitness Council in North Vancouver. Apparently a few people had expressed interest in hiking, so Mr. Roy, (always one to try to get things done), set the wheels in motion. An executive was quickly elected and it wasn't long before the first hike was held - - the West Trail of Seymour Mtn. on December 14th. Since that time we have lost some very enthusiastic members, mostly because they have moved away, but we have gained new members to fill these gaps and are making headway steadily. Hikers who were present at the founding of the club and who are still members, Lehn, Ulla & Victor Jorgensen, Harold ("Hank") & Sylvia Stirland, Stewart Boyes and Alfred Temmel. Unfortunately we don't see much of Stewart since he moved to Cloverdale and Alfred's work seems to keep him fully occupied. We feel the club is much appreciated by those who like to hike but who do not wish to take part in real mountaineering. It is certainly pleasant to see some of the surrounding country along with others who enjoy the out-of-doors.”
