  1. NSH President’s Message May/June 2025

Spring is a wonderful time of the year.  It’s a time of rebirth and renewal, a time of rejuvenation!  And so, I have good news!  Our Executive Committee has been renewed, rejuvenated (hmmm - maybe not been reborn) with two new members, Richard Cameron, Webmaster and Wendy McCarter, News Editor.  Thank you Richard and Wendy for volunteering your time, energy and expertise to helping make our club flourish!

We have a wonderful summer planned with a couple of week-long trips.  The first one is the hike and bike in Penticton June 10th to 15th.  The second, our traditional Summer Camp, has moved from being an outing in mid-summer to a post fire season event (hopefully) September 3rd to 9th at Strathcona Provincial Park, followed by a couple of days on Quadra Island.

We also have more local hikes on the schedule.  We are delighted that Barry Brisco and his wife Rosemary have volunteered to lead hikes!  They are self described “enthusiastic hikers who moved to West Vancouver in 2021, and regularly hike the North Shore mountains and sometimes up towards Whistler.”   Before moving back to Canada they lived in the San Francisco area and led day hikes for the Sierra Club.  Check out their hikes!

See you on the trails!

2) Some positive news from BC Parks about the day-use passes for Garibaldi Park.

For the 2025 season, with the exception of holidays, day-use passes will not be required mid-week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Day-use passes will be required during the following times:

Friday through Monday and holidays from June 13 to October 13 at Rubble Creek and Diamond Head.

• Each day from June 13 to September 1 and Friday through Monday from September 2  until October 13 at Cheakamus.

These changes are based on 2024 pass data, which shows most visitors want to reserve passes on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays.

See their blog post at https://engage.gov.bc.ca/bcparksblog/2025/04/24/when-do-i-need-a-day-use-pass-for-garibaldi-park-this-summer/

3) Club promotion on May 25, 2025

If you are free that day and willing to help set up our promotional material and talk to people visiting the area between 11 am and 3 pm, contact Cristina Jacob at cristina.jacob03@gmail.com.  You will get a free cycling jersey and a NSH logo badge as a token.
4) Free cycling jerseys for activity leaders and club logo badges for ALL members

If you are leading a club activity this year you are entitled to a free Cycling jersey. If you are a participant in club activities you are entitled to a free club logo badge.
Ask the activity leaders for your badge, if you haven’t got one yet.  They will give you one or tell you how to get one.
The best way to get your cycling jersey is to be an activity leader, and/or attend our AGM in November or one of our Executive meetings, in June and September. The exact dates will be published on the Website. You will learn about our club activities and also will give you a chance to pick out your favourite jersey colour , pattern and SIZE.

5) Two new hiking books to peruse ...and dream!

A) Stephan Hui: 105 Hikes In and Around Southwestern British Columbia

105 Hikes in and Around Southwestern British Columbia, 2nd edition: Hui, Stephen, McHalsie, Naxaxalhts’i Albert “Sonny”: 9781778402265: Books - Amazon.ca

B) John Baldwin: Coast Mountain High Routes

A guide to 46 summer high routes and alpine traverses in the Coast Mountains.

These are the great skyline traverses - off-trail hikes through large remote mountainous regions, continuously in the alpine, and a bit like being on a summit for an entire trip. With elements of thru-hiking, backpacking and mountaineering, you carry your camp on your back, never retrace your steps, and travel over terrain that is always new.

Describes routes varying from 3 days to 3 weeks and ranging from shorter trips in the Sea to Sky corridor to longer more remote trips in the high grasslands of the Chilcotin or above deep coastal inlets as far north as Bella Coola. All of the routes venture through wilderness regions.

Features:  Large Format 8" X 10", 296 pages, 525 colour photographs, includes trip planning information and difficulty ratings, describes 2700km and 421 days of routes.
