IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS TRIP REPORT

In her recent trip report on St Mark’s snowshoe, Ye Chu had some great advice on snowshoeing gear and preparation. Here it is:

Winter clothing: I am going to be a little pedantic here as this past weekend, I saw several people with blue lips. It is winter and it is vital you dress properly. “Cotton is rotten”, when wet from snow or sweat, it can lead to hyperthermia quite quickly.

Here is an example of what I use and it works for me. No doubt it may not work for others as we all have different body types, but at least this can be a start of going in the right direction to stay warm:

1. ultralight toque that is wind proof and insulated

2. a neck gaitor

3. a sunhat

4. sunglasses

5. sunscreen

6. 100 % merino wool base layer on legs and torso

7. ultra light synthetic fleece mid layer on legs and torso

8. an ultralight  heavy duty down jacket

9. ultralight waterproof rain jacket and pants

10. fleece insulated garden gloves that have a water proof palm with a liner glove for extra warmth on extremely cold days. I also carry a -10C rated pair of water resistance mittens and hand warmers

11.  the Icebreaker -20C 100% wool socks are superb. They have a lifetime warranty for replacement if they wear out.

12. high cut waterproof boots, that are 1/2 a size larger to allow for thick winter socks and toe warmers if required

13. ultralight collapsible hiking poles with baskets

14. ultralight 35 to 42 litre backpack with a waterproof cover

15. insulated water bottle cover to avoid frozen water and avoid  hydration bladders as the hose will freeze

16. a foldable seat pad for the snow
