Federation of Mountain Clubs AGM – June 2018

It has become a tradition for our club to send more than one representative to the FMCBC AGM which changes location every year. This year’s meeting was held in Victoria. Previous meetings were held in Penticton, Vancouver, Kamloops, Castlegar and Squamish. Next year’s meeting will be held in Chilliwack.
In addition to organizing the venue for the meeting, the host clubs are providing accommodation for the attendees and offer a variety of activities, such as hiking and cycling, over the two days of the AGM weekend. While not all the NSH hikers who go to the AGM are attending the business meeting, this event represents a great opportunity for them to meet other clubs’ members and get to know the local hiking holes.
This year, four NSH hikers went to the AGM in Victoria: Cristina Jacob, Katy Poon, Pam Robertson and Donna Nyberg. Next year you could be one of them and you will have the travel and accommodation all supported by the Federation. If you want to learn more about the Federation’s activities and the 2018 AGM here is a link to the FMCBC most recent Newsletter.

Obituary Heinz

A former long time active member of our club, Heinrich "Heinz" Wolff, has passed away, at the age of 103.  He was in good health and good spirits, and still living at home, until just a few days before his passing.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday May 12th at the Renfrew Collingwood Seniors Centre, 2970 East 22nd Avenue in Vancouver, between Renfrew and Nootka.

There are obituaries at Vancouver Sun and at the Province. For more information, feel free to contact me by e-mail or by phone (Detroit, Michigan cell phone) at 1-313-643-4132.  I am in Vancouver this week, so don't worry about time zones.

Bruce Wolff,
son of Heinrich Wolff.

MEC Discount Night, May 31, 2018

Current NSH members receive a 10% discount on regularly priced items at MEC. Now is the time to join or renew if you have not already done so.

MEC Vancouver, Thursday May 31, 2018, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. You must register with Beth at before coming to this event.

Read on for details

NSH members will receive 10% off of all regularly priced items purchased that evening – including bikes and boats! All items must be in stock and purchased through the tills that evening in order to be eligible for the discount. The discount does not extend to the following items. (1)  Clearance items, (2) All Blundstone products, (3) Items that are already included in a packaged discount. Other restrictions may also apply.

See below for out-of-stock items at the Vancouver location.

Items can be put on hold up to 48 hours before the event,  and can be picked up at the Member Services Desk during the clubnight. Items that have been purchased before the event cannot be returned and re-purchased at the discounted rate.

All NSH members who participate must also be members of Mountain Equipment Co-op in order to make a purchase. You can purchase an MEC membership ($5.00) that evening.

Changes from previous years

  • Before the 10% discount was only for items in-stock during the time of the event. Now we are able to omni channel any item of your desire from another store if we do not have it at the Vancouver location and still receive 10% off the item. To access this wonderful perk, speak to any staff member to check to see if the item is still available at another location to get it shipped over to your home or to the store. Then the staff member will call the Service Centre for you and tell them the item you're ordering and that you're in the store for the clubnight event (you will have to show the staff member your discount card). The staff member will pass the phone over to you and you will confirm shipping and payment details. Easy as pie!
  • Intense mountain bikes are now eligible for the 10% discount! YAY!

NSH’S Most Dedicated Trip Leader

A few years ago long-time NSH member, leader of trips and long serving exec member Patrick Brown scanned all hard copies of the NSH’s past Ravens & schedules and made them available to logged-in members on our website (News >> Raven Newsletters and Activities >> Historic Schedules). He also created a spreadsheet (also visible to logged in members on our website, under Activities >> Past Events) of past hikes from 2001 to 2015. This spreadsheet is a great synopsis of our history and a great source of ideas for trips. It can be sorted by hike, leader etc.  Curious, I sorted by leader to see who our biggest leaders have been.

In fifth place is Dennis Berryman who has led about 160 hikes. Unless he gets out there more often though, Alastair with about 148 hikes might catch up!

In fourth place is Peter Durnford with about 180 hikes.

In third place is Brent Ehrl with about 200 hikes who is leaping after Alan Banwell, in second place with over 200 hikes.

And in first place is IRENE MILLER who with 300 hikes under her belt is still consolidating her lead.

Can she be beaten???

NSH Summer Camp 2018

Update, April 1
The preliminary hike schedule can be accessed by members via this link after logging in.
NSH Summer camp 2018 - January announcement
The 2018 summer camp will see us return to the Kananaskis Country. We hiked there, as a club, in 2014 - check the Raven’s fall 2014 issue on our Website to get a taste of what the hiking will be like: fabulous mountains, wonderful trails, great company.
This year’s camp coordinators would like to hear from interested club members. The camp will likely take place, Sunday to Sunday, July 22 to July 29. A 4 or 5 nights add-on to Mount Assiniboine will also be considered if there is enough interest from camp participants.

If you are a member, please log on and check back at this page or Event Schedule for registration information. If you are not a member but would like to know more about this event, please email us at

We would appreciate a response by the end of January. While registration for the camp will remain open, we would like to direct our further communications only to camp registrants. Next communications will detail the accommodation options and the planning of the hiking schedule.
